A recent act of congress know as the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (check out this video) is designed to protect children from dangerous toys or other products that might contain lead. These laws are in response to toys that were imported from China and found unsafe. The Act includes books no matter where they are manufactured, even though most books have lead levels that are well below the Act’s most stringent safety standards. The industry is fighting to have most books exempted.
