Every year children drown in tragic swimming pool accidents. Recently, the Federal Goverment enacted a law to make swimming pools and hot tubs safer. Unfortunatley, many public and private pools have ignored the law and the pools remain potential hazards.

Swimming Pool Accidents

In 2002 a young girl by the name of Virginia Graeme Baker was tragically drowned in a hot tub.  The cause of the drowning was presumed to be the suction  of the hot tub and the lack of a secondary drain.  In fact, many children each year are sucked into improper drains in swimming pools across the country resulting in death, serious scarring or other injury.  In response, Congress passed what is called the The Virginia Graeme Baker Act.  This Act requires that all existing pools be retrofited to comply with the Act.  This could mean that a pool has to add a second drain or a special filter cover.  The law applies to all Connecticut Pool and Spas. Unfortunatley, due to the expense, the lack of proper drain covers, and ambiguities in the law, many pools have not complied with the Act.  This means that children are still at risk.  If you have questions about whether or not your public pool is safe, please give me a call to discuss your concerns.
