Hands-free technology not as safe as you think

Distracted driving is still a very dangerous behavior on roads in Connecticut and throughout the United States. Hands-free technology was introduced to prevent distracted driving and to make the roads safer.

Unfortunately, hands-free technology is not leading to safer roads, according to a new study. The researchers reported that hands-free technology and devices still end up distracting drivers behind the wheel.

The study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that drivers can remain distracted for up to 27 seconds after using their cellphone or using a voice-to-text function. This is a very dangerous finding as many drivers and companies believe hands-free devices to be safe.

The researchers said that when you engage in hands-free technology, such as voice commands, you remain distracted after completing your task and it takes a while to become aware of your environment again.

Auto manufacturers have said they are committed to making their hands-free technology better and less distracting for drivers. This is good news, but since most people will continue to drive their same vehicles for a while, it is important to know what steps to take now to prevent distractions behind the wheel.

The main step you need to take is to reduce distractions. This includes not using hands-free devices if they take away your focus from the road. You should also set your radio station and temperature controls before you start driving and keep your cellphone and other distractions out of reach.

Taking steps to prevent distractions can reduce the chance of getting into a car accident. All drivers need to be proactive in preventing distracted driving for roads to get safer. Take the first step today by concentrating on the road.
